in an effort to be less of a vandal, I have just fabricated myself a new bashring out of plastic - yep, plastic. It's engineering grade polyethelene, 10mm thick. I'm trialling (trialsing?!) it at the moment, I figure if anyone can break something I can If it works would anyone else be interested in a plastic copy of their current bashring?? They're very light, cheap(I bought a large piece of scrapstock for $8) and should hopefully cause less damage to stuff we ride. Different thicknesses are available, and so far it does seem reasonably tough. Will try it out on concrete and stone though. Or I could just become a better rider

Always worth a try I suppose, but I'll let you trial it first... Threshold experimented a while back with acrylic and rubber, but neither took off.

acrylic is pretty brittle. If the polyethelene doesn't work I'm gonna try polycarbonate, then maybe polyurethane. If that doesn't work I'll give up (until I get another bright idea). Am getting the hang of working with plastics, results are looking quite reasonable.

worked quite well.
I did break them eventually, but I had to hit them BLOODY hard to do so.
Can be a bit tricky to mount, as it's 10mm thick and chainring bolts are short.

Dave, do you reckon it might last me a while, anything that reduces damage to street objects is great, no big crowd cringes when damaging limestone blocks after impressing a crowd

yeah might do, you're (read: EVERYONE is) a lot smoother than me. Besides, the price is right (ie free...).
Prob is the plastic is tougher than limestone, so it still does some damage.
After exams I'd be happy to have a go at making one (or can give ya a bit of material to do ya own).
