I just noticed the server seems to reboot quite frequently when someone connects to it. I never noticed it before. I'm checking up on this; so server maybe a little dodgy for a while. Doesn't seem to be the firewall; I'm checking now whether it might be the hardware going haywire when it's forced to do some number crunching in the hot weather conditions we've been having. Symptoms you would see: The website and downloads seem to work fine; and then suddenly stop working for about three minutes (as the server reboots and runs disk checks). then works fine again... If you've had this happen before please let me know. I want to know how often it does this...

Robin,
Are you running XP, 2000 or Win9x.
Are you running simple web sharing or full IIS.
If you are running IIS on 2000 or XP enable system logging in Local System Policy. And enable a full dump file under system settings. That should tell you which process is corrupting
Is it blue screening or just simply rebooting?
I reckon you might be right about the high temp maybe causing problems

OS is Windows XP Pro. Server software is Microsoft IIS 5.1 (default on XP).
Will look into your tips; for the moment though still trying to recover windows. If the backup doesn't work it will have to be a whole reinstall... which will have to wait untill the weekend.
During reboots I got the Blue Screen Of Death for about half a second. It said something about "IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL". Something I usually get with CPU errors. It was not an IRQ conflict. Then instant reboot.
I tried lowering all memory timings for stability; still same. Only thing I can think of is the CPU overheating when the network card comes under strain.
Please put all your GEEK POWER with mine and help me solve this problem.

Robin,
One thing that I do to cross out that it is anything system software related is to boot to the XP/2000 setup CD, Proceed with the installation and when XP/2000 notices that there is an existing installation, select repair. This will leave all data and apps intact but replaces all system supplied drives and files. Although I certainly agree with what you say, this in most aspects qaulifies as a full reinstall but takes a fraction of the time.
Although on many occasions I've had servers BSOD for no reason and have not nutted out extacly what it was ,this has resolved the problem.
Thanks Luke

Robin,
If this gets to be a real hassel, I have a PIII 500 IBM 300GL spare with 20gb hard disk(can be expanded) that I can give ya for the server. I was running apache on Redhat Linux 7.3 for 6 months without a hassel as an Intranet server so it should be pretty reliable.
Also robin, hats off for putting all the effort in for this site, it is excellent and has really got me motivated. If ya need a hand with anything as I know you'll be flat out this year with schoool, just let me know, spare parts ect for PC's and also anything with the club if you find things are getting a bit much

I've often tried the repair function here; but the win XP cd I have is a crack and not bootable. This also prevents me from running the repair function... Do you have a bootable disk you could copy for me?
As for that older server of yours, that might be a good option too if it's just lying around.
Anyways; talk to ya about this on saturday. Thanks for yer support!

Website has been moved back to the old server. Haven't sorted out all those reboot problems yet... Luke's going to help us out by donating some hardware; see if that makes a difference.
Please report if downloads seem to suddenly break off, and the website goes offline for a few minutes.
